Vocabulary Technique 5 – Body Movements

Yann AO'DRENN
Body Movements
Tai / Shintai — The body — 身体 Body / body
Shintai designates the body in its entirety. It evokes the total use of the body, organised in a certain way.

A body whose limbs and head are at the service of the action of the hara.
Ayumi ashi — Movement — 歩み足 Step / lower limb
Ayumi ashi is a way of mobilising and moving the body in different ways and directions. In junomichi, movement is neither a simple walk nor a formal exercise, but involves control of the whole body.

The lower limbs participate in the movement without being its origin. Ayumi ashi is the effective use of the lower part of the body.

It is particularly evident in the koshiki no kata, where displacement is initiated by the action of the hara.
Tsugi ashi — Movement with one foot following the other — 次足 Following / lower limb
Tsugi ashi is a specific form of movement in which the feet do not pass each other.

It is mainly used in certain kata, particularly the nage no kata, allowing techniques to unfold over several steps.
