Continuing the Educational Work of Dr Jigoro Kano

Junomichi continues the educational system developed by Dr Jigoro Kano, based on the efficient use of energy, co-operation and the development of the individual through practice.

Junomichi comes directly from Kano’s Judo. This is the real Judo, the education system for he mind and body.

The Two foundations/maxims of Judo

Dr Jigoro Kano expressed the educational foundation of Judo through two inseparable principles.

Seiryoku Zenyo

Best use of energy

Every action should be carried out with the most effective use of physical and mental energy, without unnecessary force, tension or expenditure.

Jita Kyoei

Mutual aid and mutual prosperity

Practice is not directed towards individual domination. Each person develops through interaction with others, so progress is shared.

How Junomichi is Practised

Junomichi is learnt through several complementary forms of practice.
Each develops a different aspect of observation, adaptation, movement, decision and co-operation.

Kata

Kata provides a framework for studying principles, precision, adaptation and transmission. Without Kata, there is nothing. Kata are the grammar, the foundation of Junomichi. From them, we can practise Uchi Komi, Randori and Shiai.

Uchi Komi

Uchi komi consists in generating and refining a sensation through repeated movements. Through repetition, the practitioner gradually removes what hinders the action of the hara.

Randori

Randori is an exercise in which both partners allow their techniques to unfold freely. In total freedom of movement and displacement, actings and controls follow one another without codification or rules.
It is the privileged place to experience spontaneity in an encounter. It may be practised both standing and on the ground.
Free research with a partner. Randori develops adaptation, decision and movement without reducing practice to opposition or domination.

Shiai

A situation in which the practitioners create Ippon. In real Judo, it is a means of revealing understanding and the five principles. Both partners create Ippon. Both partners are Uke; they are both fully committed, and someone can become Tori only if this commitment exists.
In shiai, there is no winner or loosers. Both partners are winners if there is Ippon.
